Judge Blocks Perplexity AI Agents from Amazon Shopping

A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction against Perplexity, preventing its AI agents from making purchases on Amazon. The ruling, delivered by Judge Maxine Chesney, cites “strong evidence” that Perplexity’s Comet browser accessed Amazon user accounts “without authorization.” This legal action stems from a lawsuit filed by Amazon in November, alleging that Perplexity repeatedly ignored requests to cease its agent-based shopping activities. Amazon accused Perplexity of violating computer fraud and abuse laws by “intruding” into its marketplace and user accounts. Furthermore, Amazon claimed that Perplexity attempted to conceal its activities by disguising the Comet browser as Google Chrome. The injunction mandates that Perplexity refrain from accessing Amazon through its AI agents and destroy any data obtained from Amazon. The injunction will take effect in seven days, allowing Perplexity time to appeal the decision. Amazon's spokesperson, Lara Hendrickson, stated that the ruling would prevent unauthorized access to the Amazon store and that the company looks forward to continuing its case in court. Perplexity's spokesperson, Jesse Dwyer, stated that the startup would continue to fight for the right of internet users to choose whatever AI they want.
